Alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs are a big no-no, and limit your intake of caffeine. Saunas, hot tubs, and X-rays need to be avoided, and with your doctor’s permission take up regular exercise.
To ensure pregnancy health, you need to begin with monthly visits to your obstetrician, or to your regular doctor. These visits will, of course, increase to one visit a week towards the end of your pregnancy.
Good nutrition is very important for your healthy pregnancy. You will be eating for two, and will be taking in an extra 300 calories each day. Ensure that these extra calories are all nutritious and well balanced diet containing protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Take in minimum sweets and fats. Check with your doctor and increase your intake of vegetables, fruits, meats, milk and milk products accordingly. Limit yourself to one soft drink or a cup of coffee a day, and drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water.
Consult your doctor and take nutrients that are specifically beneficial to you and your baby. Vitamins B are specifically beneficial, with folic acid reducing the risk of the brain and spinal cord defects in your yet-to-be-born child. It is rare for pregnant women to catch any type of infections, but care needs to be exercised, as an infection to you could be fatal to your child.
You should avoid eating undercooked or uncooked and raw foods, as food poisoning could bring on pneumonia, meningitis, or even death of your unborn child. If you are a smoker, quit smoking as soon as you are pregnant to avoid having an unhealthy baby. Your smoking during pregnancy could lead to poor lung development, asthma and respiratory infections in your baby.
Do not take any medication, including over-the-counter drugs, without consulting your doctor. Your pregnancy health is dependant on you, and this in turn will tell upon the health of your baby.
